AIRSOFT TERMS

FPS: stands for Feet Per Second. FPS is the term that is most frequently used to measure the velocity or speed of the BBs. It measures the the theoretical amount of feet per second it goes, right out of the barrel. Due to air resistence, and gravity, this usually falls short to the actual range and velocity.

Hop-up: is the system that comes on all quality airsoft guns, and what it does is give the BB more distance. It is basically a bump in the top of the barrel, that gives the BB backspin, and makes it travel in a straight line for longer distances. It is usually adjustable for AEGs, and other high quality guns, so that you can adjust it for different weight BBs. The heavier the BB, the more spin you would need for it to go in a straight line.

DB: discussion board

ROF: stands for Rate Of Fire. In other words, how fast your gun can shoot BBs out. Not the velocity of the actual BBs, but how many BBs you can shoot in 'x' amount of time. Full auto gun's ROF is usually measure in RPM'S.

RPM: stands for Rounds Per Minute. This is the theoretical amount of BBs that will comes out of the gun, in a minute, if you shoot on full auto, or as fast as possible. Keep in mind that this is theoretical, and in most cases it would be very difficult to match this in actual practice.

GBB: stands for Gas Blow Back. This term is used to described airsoft guns (pistols in most cases) that run on gas, and have a blow back action. A blowback action is when the slide, or the bolt flies back, and then forward again, to load the next shot automatically.

NBB: is a term that stands for Non Blow Back. It is a gas gun, in which no blow back action occurs... For more information on a blow back action, please read the term "GBB".

CQB: stands for Close Quarters Battle. It is a type of combat where you are in close proximity with the enemy, and it is very popular in airsoft. An example of CQB would be in a house, like SWAT, or special forces.

CQC: is much like CQB and is an abbreviation of Close Quarters Combat. It means the same thing as CQB, and is combat with in a close proximity of the enemy.

Dry FIRING: is firing a weapon, or in this case an airsoft gun, with out any ammo in it. This is typically bad for airsoft guns, since the BB's provide resistance for the internals, and with out the BB's, the parts tend to slam.
EBB: stands for Electric Blow Back. An Electric blowback is a low quality pistol, that runs on 4 AA batteries. They have the blow back action, which is when the slide of the gun goes back to load the next round.

FTK: stands for Full Tune-up Kit. It is an upgrade kit made by systema, that includes all necessary parts to do a complete full upgrade onto your AEG.

H&K: is a real firearm company that makes weapons such as the MP5's and G3's. The H&K stands for Heckler and Koch.

HK: is a term used by airsofters to abbreviate Hong Kong. Hong Kong is where most popular overseas airsoft retailers are located, and is basically the airsoft capital of the world.

HGHU: stands for High Grade Hop Up. It is usually applied to Tokyo Marui spring pistols, and means that they have hop-up. The TM spring pistols are usually the highest quality of spring pistols.

KLICK: means kilometer, you may or may not hear this during a skirmish and it describles that distance one may be from you or you to them or the distance one must travel.

Example> I'm 4 KLICKS out.
That would mean that I am 4 kilometer from your position or where I am suppose to be.

LBV: stands for Load Bearing Vest. It is that is capable of carrying a bunch of things, or a "Load". In airsoft this typically means an assault vest with magazine pouches an essnetials, along with a place to put other gear that they may like to carry.

MilSim: is an abbreviation for Military Simulation. Military Simulation is playing with the goal to simulate military siutations and operations, and limiting as many variables between them as possible. It is what makes airsoft so popular.

For example: Same gear, same tactics, some scenarios, same amount of ammo, same types of groups, etc.

OPFOR: is an abbreviation for opposing force. It is commonly used in training missions, where they set up a OPFOR, for training purposes.

PDW: stands for Personnel Defense Weapon. It is a small weapon, usually a sub-machine gun, used for personnel defense, rather then an assaulting role. Think of it as a powerful side arm =)

RAS: stands for Rail Accessory System. It is a system that is used to mount accessories such as lasers, flash lights, grips, battery boxes, etc.
RIS: stands for Rail Interface System. It is used to mount accessories such as lasers, flashlights, grips, etc.

ROE: stands for Rules of Engagement this is used by both military and "airsoft" teams to designate what engagement is or isn't allowed. For example: Rule of Engagement is no hostile actions, avoid all enemy contact, fire only in defense. What is means this that you are to not engage the enemy, do whatever it takes to avoid them and only fire, if fired upon.

SAW: stands for Squad Automatic Weapon.
